Vortex, Steel roller coaster in Kings Island, Mason, Ohio
Vortex was a steel roller coaster in Kings Island, Mason, Ohio, that carried riders through six inversions along 3,800 feet (1,158 meters) of track. The ride climbed a 148-foot (45-meter) vertical lift before racing down at 55 miles per hour (88 kilometers per hour).
The ride opened in 1987 and held records for both height and number of inversions at the time. It closed in 2019 after 33 years of operation.
During its 33 years of operation, Vortex transported over 46 million visitors, making it the sixth most frequented attraction at Kings Island since 1972.
The roller coaster operated three trains at once, with each train made of seven cars holding a total of 28 riders. This setup allowed up to 1,600 guests to ride every hour.
After closing, sections of track were cut into 1.5-inch (38-millimeter) pieces, mounted on stands, and sold to collectors. The ride carried over 46 million guests during its time in service.
