The Racer, Wooden roller coaster at Kings Island, Ohio
The Racer is a wooden roller coaster at Kings Island, Ohio, with two parallel tracks each running over 3,415 feet. Trains reach speeds around 53 miles per hour (85 kilometers per hour) during the roughly two-minute ride.
This installation opened in 1972 alongside Kings Island theme park and was designed by John Allen. Its success helped revive interest in wooden coasters across the United States during the 1970s.
This attraction gained recognition across the United States after a 1973 episode of The Brady Bunch was filmed here. Many visitors still remember that television appearance and consider the ride part of American pop culture history.
Both tracks depart simultaneously from separate loading platforms and run side by side, allowing up to 2,400 people per hour to ride. Trains operate during favorable weather and when the park has sufficient operations.
From 1982 to 2007, one track ran backwards while the other went forward. This setup made it the first racing coaster worldwide to operate that way.
