Weinviertel

The Weinviertel is a wine region in Lower Austria that spreads across rolling hills covered in vineyards. The landscape is shaped by countless wineries, cellars, and small villages nestled between the grapevines.

The region developed over centuries into Austria's largest wine production area through continuous cultivation of grape varieties. Grüner Veltliner became the defining variety of the region and shaped its identity over time.

Wine cellars in Retz form an underground tunnel network beneath the town that preserves generations of winemaking knowledge. This subterranean maze shows how deeply wine production is woven into the local way of life.

Visitors can explore the region on cycling paths that connect wineries, castles, and museums throughout the landscape. The routes are named after grape varieties and offer different difficulty levels and distances to suit various interests.

The eastern part of the region contains functioning oil fields operated by OMV, creating an unexpected contrast with the surrounding vineyards. This industrial presence alongside agricultural tradition reveals how different economic activities coexist in the same landscape.
