Hochwildehaus, Mountain hut in Ötztal Valley, Austria
Hochwildehaus is a mountain hut located at 2883 meters on the edge of the Gurgler Ferner glacier in the Ötztal Alps. The facility provides accommodation for climbers and hikers exploring this remote high-altitude terrain.
The hut was built in 1939 by the German Alpine Club as a base for high-altitude expeditions in the region. The nearby Fidelitashütte, dating from 1896, originally served as a winter shelter for mountaineers.
The structure represents traditional Alpine mountaineering infrastructure, managed by the German Alpine Club to support high-altitude expeditions in the region.
The trek from Obergurgl takes about 4.5 hours with roughly 950 meters of elevation gain over steep mountain terrain. The trail passes through an intermediate hut and covers rocky, high-altitude slopes where pace depends on fitness and acclimatization.
The facility contains 30 beds and 60 dormitory spaces, positioned near several climbing routes leading to peaks such as Schalfkogel and Hochwilde.
