Azerbaijan Museum of Geology, museum in Azerbaijan
The Azerbaijan Museum of Geology in Baku is a museum displaying rock and mineral specimens collected from across the country. It contains more than 5000 exhibits organized into six sections covering mineralogy, petrography, paleontology, and geological maps showing how resources are distributed throughout Azerbaijan.
The museum opened in 1969 as a local institution and received its current name in 1982 after a government decision. Major renovations between 2008 and 2010 expanded the building and modernized its displays, more than doubling the exhibition space.
The museum displays specimens that connect to local building traditions and craftsmanship practices. Visitors can see how rocks and stones have shaped the way people construct buildings and create artwork in the region.
The museum is centrally located in Baku and easy to visit as part of a day exploring the city. The exhibition is clearly organized into sections, making it simple to navigate and spend as much time as you wish examining the displays.
The museum displays fossils spanning many geological periods, from the Silurian age to the Neogene period, revealing the long history of life in the region. Some specimens, such as Middle Jurassic samples from Soyugbulag and Gadabay, reach back millions of years.
