The Statue of Bahram Gur stands in Azneft Square in Baku and depicts the moment when the legendary hero raises his sword against a dragon-like creature. Cast in bronze, the monument reaches approximately 4.6 meters tall and incorporates water features as part of its design.
The monument was created in 1959 when three art students named Aslan Rustamov, Albert Mustafayev, and Gorkhmaz Sujaddinov entered an urban beautification competition in Baku. Their winning design became a defining feature of the square and reflects the city's post-war artistic development.
The statue portrays a legendary Persian king known from Nizami's classical poem The Seven Beauties, a work deeply rooted in Azerbaijani culture. The hero and his battle represent courage and strength that remain meaningful to people today.
The monument is located near Baku's funicular station and remains visible from multiple angles around the square. Visitors can approach it from different sides and take in the water feature that animates the space.
Interestingly, the face of the hero was modeled after the appearance of Albert Mustafayev, one of the three artists who designed it. This hidden connection between creator and creation gives the statue a human dimension that visitors rarely discover.
