Toledo Province contains 204 municipalities across central Spain within Castile-La Mancha. The Tagus River crosses the territory from northeast to west through rolling hills and broad plains.
Medieval fortresses and monasteries arose under Christian, Jewish and Muslim rule between the 8th and 15th centuries. The territory was organized as a province in its current form in 1833.
Ceramic workshops in Talavera de la Reina and Puente del Arzobispo follow methods that UNESCO recognizes as intangible heritage. Artisans still apply geometric and floral patterns to tiles and vessels using techniques passed down through generations.
Agriculture shapes much of the plains with crops of barley, wheat, olives and grapes. Industry centers mainly in the provincial capital and in Talavera de la Reina to the west.
Illán de Vacas ranks as the smallest municipality in Spain with only three residents. The village sits near the northern bank of the Tagus among open fields.
