Afar Region, Administrative division in northeastern Ethiopia
The Afar Region encompasses 72,053 square kilometers of land, featuring the Danakil Depression, volcanic landscapes, and salt lakes in northeastern Ethiopia.
The territory gained official regional status in 1995 during Ethiopia's administrative reorganization, with Semera replacing Asaita as the capital city.
The population consists of 90 percent Afar people who maintain traditional pastoral lifestyles, raising cattle, sheep, goats, and camels across the region.
The region connects to neighboring territories through the paved Awash-Assab highway, which serves as a primary transportation route for commerce and travel.
Scientists discovered the famous human ancestor fossil Lucy within this region, marking it as a significant location for paleontological research.
