Almora, Village in Uttarakhand, India
Almora is a town in Almora district of Uttarakhand, spreading along a mountain ridge in the Kumaon part of the Himalaya. The layout follows the terrain with narrow paths running between residential blocks and small shops.
King Kalyan Chand chose this ridge in 1568 as capital of his kingdom and ordered fortified structures built. Later the settlement became a garrison post and administrative seat under British colonial rule.
The town center gathers around an old Hindu temple where traders settle with copper work and handwoven wool blankets. Many houses show traditional wooden balconies with carved details lining narrow lanes.
Travelers reach the area through Pantnagar Airport or Kathgodam railway station, from where buses and shared taxis climb into the mountains. Paths within the settlement often run steep and require sturdy shoes.
In 1938 the dancer Udai Shankar opened an academy for performing arts here, drawing students from different parts of the country. The school functioned as a residential community where classes took place outdoors against the mountain backdrop.
