Thikse Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Leh district, India
The monastery complex rises on twelve levels along a hillside, containing temples, living quarters, and a large assembly hall at 3,600 meters elevation.
Founded in the 15th century by Je Tsongkhapa's disciples, the monastery expanded its influence by managing ten additional religious sites across the Ladakh region.
The Maitreya Temple houses a 15-meter Buddha statue and contains numerous ancient manuscripts, traditional murals, and religious artifacts representing Tibetan Buddhist heritage.
Visitors can access the monastery through guided tours, which include observations of morning prayers and exploration of multiple ceremonial halls throughout the complex.
The monastery maintains a separate building section dedicated to female renunciates, operating the Nyerma Nunnery within its grounds.
