Zorawar Fort

Zorawar Fort is a fortified structure on Skara Road built with stone walls and clay construction, containing multiple rooms that house exhibition pieces and military artifacts. The buildings vary in size and function, with some serving as storage for historical objects and weapons from earlier times.

The fort was built in 1836 by General Zorawar Singh Kahluria, a military commander under Dogra ruler Gulab Singh, during northern expansion campaigns. It emerged as a key defensive position when the Dogra Dynasty was consolidating control over Ladakh.

This fort served as a seat of power and reflects how the Dogra rulers organized their rule in the region. The building style shows how architecture adapted to Ladakh's climate and available materials.

The best time to visit is from May through September when the weather is more stable and the paths are easier to navigate. Plan your visit for morning or early afternoon hours when the light is good and temperatures are most pleasant.

The fort preserves personal belongings from the era of Maharaja Gulab Singh, including ancient coins and stamps that reveal how administration worked in that period. These objects offer a rare glimpse into the daily life of the ruling elite of that time.
