Matho Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Leh district, India.
Matho Monastery is a Buddhist religious center in the Ladakh region, situated high in the mountains on the Indus River banks with another major monastery directly across the water. The complex features traditional stone buildings arranged around courtyards, containing prayer halls, monks' quarters, and a museum space.
The monastery was founded in 1410 by Lama Dugpa Dorje and belongs to the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism. It preserves religious artworks dating from several centuries, reflecting its long spiritual importance to the region.
The monastery is known for hosting an oracle festival each year, where two monks enter a trance state after deep meditation to offer predictions and guidance to visitors and local people. This event draws pilgrims seeking answers to personal questions.
The site is about a half hour drive from Leh and accessible by taxi, motorcycle, or organized transport. A steep uphill path leads from the landing area to the complex, so wear sturdy shoes and dress for mountain conditions.
The complex houses its own museum displaying hand-painted religious scrolls and ceremonial masks worn during traditional rituals. These objects span different periods and show the artistic history of the monastic community.
