Raichur is a city in Raichur district of Karnataka, sitting on the Deccan plateau between two major rivers. Streets rise from flat commercial quarters up toward the stone fortifications that tower over the plain.
Multiple dynasties ruled here before the region became a center of the Bijapur Sultanate in the late 15th century. Control over the city changed hands repeatedly among regional rulers due to its strategic location.
The name comes from the Telugu words meaning rough stone, referring to the rocky terrain that defines the landscape. Markets and neighborhoods still follow patterns set centuries ago, with traders and craftspeople working in quarters inherited from earlier times.
