Saser Kangri, Mountain peak in Leh district, India
Saser Kangri is a mountain peak in the Saser Muztagh range, which forms the easternmost section of the Karakoram mountains. The peak rises to 7,672 meters and is surrounded by several other high summits that together create a connected high-altitude massif.
The first successful ascent occurred in June 1973 when a four-member team reached the summit from the western approach. This achievement marked an important milestone in Karakoram exploration.
The name comes from Tibetan language roots and refers to the mountain's geological nature. Local people view the peak as an important landmark that defines their region's identity.
Access requires official permits and extensive high-altitude climbing experience along with careful preparation. Most expeditions use the Nubra Valley as their starting point for approaching the mountain.
The massif consists of six distinct summits, with five additional peaks reaching above 7,200 meters. This cluster of multiple high-altitude peaks makes the area one of the most complex mountain plateaus in the region.
