Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Research organization in New Delhi, India.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is a government research institution in New Delhi that operates 39 laboratories across India, studying questions of aerospace engineering, life sciences and environmental research. The organization employs more than 14,000 staff members, including 4,600 scientists who work on projects ranging from genomics to aeronautics.
Indian scientists founded the institution on September 26, 1942, to create organized research facilities for natural resource development and industrial growth. After independence, the government expanded the network and opened new laboratories in several states.
The institute develops medicines and technologies now used in Indian hospitals, factories and research centers across the country. Many Indian scientists apply for the annual prize named after Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, one of the founders of the institution and a pioneer of applied chemistry in the nation.
The laboratories and headquarters sit in different neighborhoods of New Delhi and other Indian cities, with access varying by location and security requirements. Visitors should inquire in advance whether specific facilities offer public tours or exhibitions.
Researchers here developed India's first synthetic drug and have since filed more than 2,900 international patents for innovations in science and technology. Some laboratories share their findings in public lectures or museums dedicated to the history of science in India.
