Ichari Dam, Gravity dam in Uttarakhand, India.

Ichari Dam is a concrete gravity structure across the Tons River in Uttarakhand, measuring 59 meters high and 155 meters long. The installation holds 8,930,000 cubic meters of water and feeds two hydroelectric power stations that generate electricity for the region.

The dam was completed in 1972, marking the start of a new phase in hydroelectric development for Northern India. This project helped establish reliable power supplies across the region in the decades that followed.

The name comes from the nearby village of Ichari, linking this infrastructure to the communities that live around it. Local people see this place as part of their landscape and their shared story.

Visitors can view the structure from several vantage points, with the best views often from the dam itself or from areas along the valley side. It helps to wear sturdy footwear and be aware of conditions, as the surroundings vary with the season and water level.

The spillway system includes seven floodgates that allow a maximum water discharge of 13,500 cubic meters per second. This large capacity shows how the structure was engineered to handle extreme water flows.
