Pandalur taluk, Administrative district in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, India.
Pandalur taluk is an administrative district in the Nilgiris region featuring mountainous terrain at around 1100 meters elevation with extensive tea estates and dense forest cover. The landscape shows rolling green slopes, plantation fields, and wooded areas that form the dominant features across the territory.
The territory was transferred from Wayanad Taluk to the Nilgiris district in 1877, reshaping the administrative boundaries of Tamil Nadu. This shift established the current administrative structure that has persisted for over a century.
Indigenous groups such as the Paniyar, Kurumbas, and Kattu Nayakkans have their own languages and customs that shape daily life in the region. Their traditional ways are visible in village settlements and agricultural practices throughout the taluk.
The region is accessible by regular government buses running from Ooty at about 65 kilometers away or from Gudalur at about 23 kilometers away. Visiting during cooler months makes travel more comfortable as roads remain easily passable.
Former gold mining sites from the 19th century remain scattered across the area, particularly around Devala, before the region shifted toward agriculture. These traces of earlier mining activity are now largely hidden beneath the current landscape of farms and forests.
