The Velliangiri Mountains form a chain of seven hills in the western part of the Western Ghats, with peaks ranging from 520 to 1840 meters (approximately 1706 to 6037 feet) in elevation. The landscape is shaped by dense forests, rock formations, and narrow paths that wind through steep slopes.
Ancient writings from the region describe spiritual events at this location, recorded in the Kachiappar Perur Purana. Over centuries, these hills developed into a destination for pilgrims and travelers from different parts of southern India.
The name Velliangiri comes from Tamil and means
The trails are accessible only during a specific season, mainly between February and May, when weather conditions are more favorable. The climb to the highest point takes about six hours and covers roughly eight kilometers, so an early start is advisable.
Temperatures in this region swing dramatically, ranging from near zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter months to 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer. These sharp contrasts influence the vegetation and visitor experiences significantly depending on the season.
