Eachanari Vinayagar Temple, Hindu temple in Coimbatore, India.
Eachanari Vinayagar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ganesha, located in the Eachanari area on the outskirts of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The temple follows the Dravidian style of construction, with a tall tower above the entrance gate and a large granite statue of the deity housed inside.
The temple was built on the spot where a cart carrying a Ganesha idol from Madurai reportedly came to a sudden stop and could not be moved further. This event led local people to install the idol at that location and establish a place of worship around it.
The story behind this temple's founding is still told by local devotees: a cart transporting a Ganesha idol reportedly broke down at this exact spot, which was taken as a sign to install the idol there. Pilgrims arriving today often touch the base of the statue before praying, a gesture rooted in that founding moment.
The temple opens in the early morning and again in the evening, so visiting at either end of the day tends to be a good choice. Shoes must be removed before entering the inner hall, and modest clothing is expected of all visitors.
The granite statue of Ganesha here is said to be among the largest of its kind in Tamil Nadu, rising to a height that draws attention from some distance away. What makes this unusual is that the statue was placed directly at a roadside location rather than within a purpose-built sanctuary first.
