Perur Pateeswarar Temple

Perur Pateeswarar Temple is a Shiva sanctuary in Coimbatore, India, that features open courtyards with pillared halls and a central shrine room. Stonework covers walls and pillars, while several corridors run around the main area and lead to smaller niches.

The sanctuary began in the second century and was expanded in the following eras by rulers from Tamil Nadu. Later dynasties added more halls and ornaments that shaped its current appearance.

The name comes from the Sanskrit word for Shiva as supreme lord, while temple visitors still perform prayer rituals with oil and flowers today. Outside major festival days, worshippers come here to light incense before the carved figures and kneel in front of the inner shrine.

The temple sits around seven kilometers from Coimbatore center and can be reached via local roads. Visitors should cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering the main areas.

Several stone panels on the inner walls carry inscriptions in old Tamil script that preserve verses and administrative records from past eras. These panels serve researchers as a source for studying regional language and governance.
