Theneeswarar Temple, Hindu temple in Vellalore, Tamil Nadu, India.
Theneeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple in the village of Vellalore, near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India, built in the Dravidian style. It features tall gateway towers, carved stone walls, and covered columned halls arranged around the central shrines.
The temple was founded in the 15th century, during a period when Hindu worship was growing across the region. Over the following centuries, local rulers and communities added new structures, gradually shaping the complex into what it is today.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and his presence is felt in the symbols, figures, and daily rituals that shape life there. Priests perform morning and evening prayers while devotees bring offerings of flowers, fruit, and coconut to the inner shrines.
The temple is in Vellalore village and is easy to reach from Coimbatore by bus or car. Visiting in the morning or evening lets you see the prayer rituals in action, and visitors are expected to remove shoes and keep shoulders covered before entering.
The name Theneeswarar translates roughly as "Lord of Honey" in Tamil, a title linked to local stories about bees that once gathered near the shrine. This connection is still reflected in small motifs carved into some of the outer walls of the complex.
