Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary

The Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary spans 1,600 square kilometers across the Ladakhi Changthang plateau, featuring three high-altitude lakes: Tso Moriri, Pangong Tso, and Tso Kar.

The sanctuary formed part of ancient trade routes connecting India with Tibet, where merchants traversed these high-altitude passages while respecting the natural habitat.

Local communities near the sanctuary maintain traditional practices of sustainable livestock grazing while supporting conservation efforts for endangered species like snow leopards.

Visitors can reach the sanctuary through the Leh-Manali Highway, with the nearest airport being Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, serving connections from Delhi.

The sanctuary supports populations of Tibetan wild ass, black-necked cranes, and 44 species of water birds at elevations exceeding 4,000 meters above sea level.
