East English River Provincial Park, Provincial park in Kenora District, Canada
East English River Provincial Park is a provincial park in the Kenora District of Ontario, Canada, protecting a river system that runs through lakes and forest along the English River. The area spans from Highway 599 to Minnitaki Lake and offers a network of paddling routes that connect different sections of the river, including stretches of rapids.
The park was created in 2003 to protect the English River system and the natural landscape around it. Before that, the area had been used mainly for logging, which is why old forestry roads still cross parts of the land today.
Several rock art sites are found along the riverbanks, left by Indigenous peoples who traveled these waterways for generations. The paintings appear directly on rock faces near the water and are still visible to paddlers passing by today.
The park is reached via Highway 599 and former logging roads, and commercial outfitters at Press Lake can help with planning a stay. Anyone planning to paddle should check river conditions ahead of time, as some sections with rapids call for solid boat-handling skills.
The English River runs through the park with no dams along its course, which is rare for a river of its size in northwestern Ontario. Because the flow is uncontrolled, water levels and current strength can shift noticeably from one season to the next, making each paddling trip a different experience.
