Université de Yaoundé I, University in Cameroon
Université de Yaoundé I is a large public higher education institution in Cameroon's capital offering programs in humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The campus spreads across a wide area in the heart of the city with multiple buildings, lecture halls, administrative offices, and green spaces where students and staff move between classes.
The university was established in 1993 when the original University of Yaoundé was divided into two separate institutions to accommodate growing student numbers. This division allowed Yaoundé I to focus on scientific, social science, and humanities disciplines.
The university brings together students from different regions of Cameroon who gather in small groups on campus to discuss their studies and future plans. These daily interactions between young people from various parts of the country create a space for exchange and shared learning.
The campus is located in the Ngoa-Ekélé neighborhood and is walkable throughout, with classes and activities happening both morning and afternoon when most students are moving around. The university has libraries, sports facilities, and laboratory spaces that visitors can usually access during regular operating hours.
The university stands out for offering bilingual instruction in French and English, reflecting Cameroon's linguistic diversity and allowing students to learn in both languages. This approach directly integrates the country's cultural reality into its teaching and learning process.
