Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant, nuclear power plant in Fujian, China
Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant is a facility on the coast near Fuqing that generates electricity using nuclear reactors. It contains multiple reactors including modern Hualong One units designed to operate safely for around 60 years, with extensive safety systems built to withstand natural disasters and extreme weather.
The plant began operations in the early 2000s after being built on previously unused mountainside terrain over more than a decade. Following lessons from the Fukushima incident in Japan, it underwent significant upgrades to monitoring and control systems to improve resilience against natural disasters.
The facility itself is not open to the public, but a dedicated exhibition center offers educational programs and interactive displays about nuclear technology. Schools and visitors can arrange to attend science talks and learn about how the plant operates through organized educational activities and group visits.
The plant uses cutting-edge Chinese Hualong One reactor technology designed to operate safely for around 60 years with advanced earthquake and extreme weather resilience. This represents a significant step forward in domestic nuclear engineering and demonstrates how the country has developed its own advanced reactor designs.
