Eastern Harbour Crossing, Road and rail tunnel under Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong
The Eastern Harbour Crossing is a tunnel beneath Victoria Harbour connecting Hong Kong Island to Kowloon, serving both cars and trains. It uses separate tubes for road traffic and the MTR Tseung Kwan O line to handle movement in both directions.
The project started in 1986 after original bridge plans were abandoned over concerns about air traffic at Kai Tak airport. It opened in 1989 and became a key part of Hong Kong's transport network.
The Prince of Wales, Charles, officially inaugurated the Eastern Harbour Crossing during his November 1989 visit to Hong Kong, marking its integration into local infrastructure.
The tunnel operates with a digital toll system that enables continuous flow of thousands of vehicles daily. Drivers can easily access the openings on both sides, where ramps and exits are clearly marked.
The structure combines both road and rail passages, with the rail section specifically serving the MTR Tseung Kwan O line through separate tunnel tubes.
