China Academy of Art, Art school in Hangzhou, China
The China Academy of Art is an art school in Hangzhou with eight departments offering painting, sculpture, design, and film across multiple programs from bachelor to doctoral degrees. The main campus sits on Nanshan beside West Lake, while additional campuses in Shanghai and Xiangshan provide specializations in architecture and design.
The school was founded in 1928 as the National Academy of Art by Cai Yuanpei on the banks of West Lake. It moved through several locations and underwent name changes over the decades before adopting its current name, China Academy of Art, in 1993.
The school is known locally as Guomei, meaning National Art School, reflecting its role as a leading institution in Chinese art education. The campus blends traditional Chinese architecture with modern design, which reflects the school's philosophy of bringing together Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
The main campus at Nanshan is easily reached by public transport from the city center, and parking is available for visitors who drive. A free shuttle bus connects the main campus to the more distant campus, making it easy to access different departments and exhibitions.
A former building complex on campus once belonged to Hu Xueyan, an influential Qing-era businessman, and today remains part of the school's physical heritage. This historical connection shows how the academy preserves local history while incorporating it into its current mission of art education.
