Shigatse, Prefecture-level city in Tibet, China

Shigatse is a city on the Tibetan Plateau that spreads across a mountainous region with valleys and basins at high elevation. The landscape shapes how the city develops and connects its different neighborhoods across the terrain.

The region was historically known as Tsang before gaining prefecture-level city status in 2014. This administrative change placed it on equal footing with Lhasa, Tibet's capital.

The Tashilhunpo Monastery shapes the city's spiritual life as the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, drawing pilgrims from across the region. Walking through the area, you notice how religious practice influences local architecture and daily rhythms.

The city connects to Lhasa by railway, and the local airport offers flight connections for travelers. The high elevation requires time to adjust, so plan to move slowly and rest regularly.

Five peaks in the region rise above 8,000 meters, including Mount Qomolangma, placing it in the world's highest zone. This remarkable elevation attracts mountaineers and researchers from around the globe.
