Sayram Lake, Alpine lake in Tianshan Mountains, China
Sayram Lake is an alpine lake in the Tianshan Mountains located in northern Xinjiang province, China. The body of water spans several hundred square kilometers at an elevation of around 2,070 meters (6,790 ft), surrounded by forested slopes and meadows.
The lake served as a key point along the northern branch of the Silk Road, where Saka nomads, Tocharians, and Göktürks established settlements in surrounding valleys. These early connections shaped the region for centuries.
Kazakh communities living near the lake maintain their traditional ways, with seasonal celebrations and stories passed down through generations of nomadic families. Visitors can directly encounter these living practices and the strong connection between people and the water.
The best time to visit is from May through early October, when temperatures remain mild and roads are accessible. It is important to allow plenty of travel time from the nearest city and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
The lake originally contained no native fish species, but since 1976 cold-water fish were introduced and transformed it into a major aquaculture center. Today commercial fish farms operate here, shaping the ecology of the water.
