Ngong Ping is a highland plateau on the western side of Lantau Island, situated at an elevation of about 520 meters and characterized by grasslands. The landscape is bordered by low shrubs and offers expansive views across the surrounding areas.
Po Lin Monastery was established in 1906 when three Buddhist monks from Jiangsu province built a small stone house for teaching. The monastery later expanded to become a major religious center on the plateau.
The site is home to Po Lin Monastery and the Wisdom Path, where visitors walk past stone columns inscribed with the Heart Sutra in traditional Chinese calligraphy. The columns form a figure-8 pattern that reflects the spiritual purpose of the location.
Visitors reach the plateau via a 25-minute cable car ride from Tung Chung station or by taking bus 23 through the mountain roads. Weather conditions can change quickly at this elevation, so it is best to bring layers and rain protection.
The plateau is a popular landing zone for paragliders who take advantage of the steady wind conditions in the area. The thermal updrafts allow for extended flights across the landscape.
