Hawara

The mud-brick pyramid structure stands with a base of 105 meters per side and contains passages leading to a central burial chamber with quartzite sarcophagus.

Pharaoh Amenemhat III constructed this pyramid during the Middle Kingdom period around 1850 BC as his final resting place after abandoning his Dahshur project.

The site contained painted mummy portraits from Roman times and manuscripts of Homer's Iliad, discovered by archaeologist William Flinders Petrie in the 1880s.

The pyramid entrance faces ongoing groundwater issues, making interior access challenging while exterior limestone casing blocks have disappeared over centuries of stone reuse.

The adjacent mortuary temple complex earned recognition from ancient Greek historians who named it 'The Labyrinth' due to its intricate system of galleries.
