6th of October City, Planned city in Giza Governorate, Egypt
6th of October City is a planned settlement with residential neighborhoods, industrial zones, and a technology park in Giza Governorate, located about 32 kilometers west of Cairo. Streets run in wide grids and buildings alternate between low-rise townhouses, apartment blocks, and gated compounds with their own green spaces.
President Anwar El Sadat founded the settlement in 1979 to relieve pressure on the capital and create new residential and work areas in the desert. Over the following decades, the place grew steadily through the construction of universities, industrial parks, and private housing developments.
The name of the place commemorates the crossing of the Suez Canal by Egyptian forces during the 1973 war. This event still shapes collective memory and appears in street names and public spaces throughout the area.
Residential areas cover wide distances, so a car or taxi is often needed to move between different neighborhoods. Most shops and restaurants are located in shopping centers or along the main thoroughfares, which see heavier traffic especially in the late afternoon.
Dar Al Fouad Hospital was the first facility on the African continent to receive international accreditation for its cardiac surgery department. The Smart Village technology park hosts over 150 IT companies working in a wired infrastructure with high-speed internet access.
