The depression spans over 1,270 square kilometers and features agricultural fields irrigated by the 24-kilometer-long Bahr Yussef canal from the Nile.
During the Twelfth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, pharaohs utilized the natural lake of Faiyum as a water reservoir for agricultural development.
The region produced remarkable mummy portraits during Roman Egypt, with painted faces placed over mummy wrappings, preserved by the desert climate.
The oasis generates agricultural products including cotton, flax, hemp, rice, sugar cane, roses, oranges, peaches, pomegranates, figs, grapes, and olives.
The Wadi Hitan section contains some of the most complete fossil whale skeletons globally, located in what was once a marine environment.
