Matariya is a residential neighborhood in Cairo with a long history, shaped by ancient ruins and modern buildings throughout the area. The area contains the Obelisk of Senusret I, a massive granite stone from pharaonic times that still stands upright today. Elsewhere, there is the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary, a site where tradition holds the Holy Family found refuge, and from which many visitors collect water believed to have healing properties.
