Sothic cycle, Astronomical calendar system in Memphis, Egypt.

The Sothic cycle spans 1461 Egyptian years, tracking the heliacal rising of the star Sirius to mark agricultural and seasonal patterns.

Ancient Egyptians established this calendar system around 4241 BCE, using the predictable appearance of Sirius to create a reliable time measurement method.

Egyptian priests monitored the star Sirius, known as Sothis, connecting its annual appearance to the flooding of the Nile and religious ceremonies.

The system enabled precise agricultural planning by predicting the Nile floods through astronomical observations of Sirius at specific locations like Heliopolis.

This calendar system accumulated an error of one day every four years, completing a full cycle of misalignment and realignment over 1460 years.
