Kom el-Sultan is an ancient temple complex in Abydos with extensive walls and multiple structured areas. The site shows different building phases and contains many remains of altars, chapels, and burial monuments.
The site began in ancient times and was modified and expanded by different pharaohs over many periods. Archaeological work over the past 150 years has uncovered the traces of this long development.
This place was dedicated to the god Osiris and attracted pilgrims from across Egypt who came here to worship. The inscriptions and religious objects visible today tell us about the spiritual beliefs that mattered most to ancient Egyptians.
The site is located in Abydos and is reachable by foot through pathways that also connect to nearby archaeological areas. Visitors should come early in the day and be prepared for strong heat, as shade is scarce on site.
A rare three-dimensional statue of a pharaoh was found here, offering insight into the craftsmanship of the time. Such fully intact human representations are extremely rare in Egyptian temples.
