Al Maghrah

Al Maghrah is a depression in Matrouh Governorate featuring a saltwater lake ringed by reed marshes and saline wetlands. The landscape sits roughly 37 meters below sea level, creating a wet pocket of life surrounded by desert dryness.

The depression preserves marine and river sediments from roughly 18 million years ago, containing fossils of extinct predators and reptiles. This geological record shows when an ancient sea once covered this area.

Local communities have developed specific agricultural methods to cultivate crops using the underground water reservoir that supplies the region.

The location sits about 40 kilometers south of El Alamein and roughly 56 kilometers from the Mediterranean, reachable via roads serving nearby petroleum operations. Visitors should expect remote conditions and limited facilities in the surrounding area.

This depression forms part of one of Egypt's four main groundwater aquifers and supports deep soil layers reaching 150 centimeters. This underground water storage allows plants to thrive in an otherwise dry landscape.
