Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Private deemed university in Pilani, India
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science is a private university in Pilani, Rajasthan, focused on technical and scientific programs. The main campus covers about 133 hectares and includes research facilities, libraries, and residential buildings for more than ten thousand students.
The institution began in 1929 as a small college under the Birla Education Trust. After expanding with science faculties and pharmacy schools, it received deemed university status in 1964 with an independent curriculum.
The institute takes its name from industrialist G. D. Birla, whose family supported the founding in the small town of Pilani. The fourteen residential halls carry names of historical figures from Indian history and philosophy, with each building forming its own community of students from technical and scientific fields.
Entry is through a national admission test that determines placement in various subjects. Most activities take place within the campus, as Pilani is a small town with limited infrastructure.
The selection rate in 2012 was about 1.47 percent, making it one of the most selective technical institutions worldwide. The admission process relies solely on results from a computer-based test without personal interviews.
