Province of Bologna, Former administrative province in Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Province of Bologna was an administrative region in Emilia-Romagna that stretched from flat plains surrounding the capital city to the Apennine mountains in the south. The area included many municipalities and formed a key connection between northern and central Italy.
The province was established in 1859 and existed as an independent administrative unit for more than 150 years. In 2014 it was transformed into the Metropolitan City of Bologna, gaining a new status within the regional administrative structure.
The province contained 60 municipalities, each maintaining distinct traditions, with Bologna city holding the primary university founded in 1088 at its center.
The former provincial area is best explored from Bologna's center outward, since it covers a large region with varied landscapes. The best way to experience this area's diversity is by using the good road connections between different towns and municipalities.
The province received the Gold Medal for Civil Merit, recognizing its administrative excellence and contributions to regional development over 155 years.
