The museum contains four sectors dedicated to different time periods, from prehistoric fossils to Roman artifacts, spread across multiple exhibition floors.
The institution began as the Museo del Seminario in 1780 under Bishop Alagona before receiving national status through a royal decree in 1878.
The collection displays Greek colonies artifacts from Sicily, including marble statues of Kouros, votive figures of Demeter, and the Venus Anadiomene sculpture.
Visitors can explore the museum Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 to 18:00 and Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00, with full wheelchair accessibility.
The facility incorporates a non-Catholic cemetery containing the tomb of poet August von Platen within its grounds near Villa Landolina.
