Forte Fenil

Forte Fenil is a square fortification located in the alpine region at 1173 meters (3847 feet) elevation, surrounded by a moat on three sides. The structure displays the construction methods typical of late 19th century mountain forts, with thick walls and strategically positioned openings for artillery.

Constructed in 1891, it was part of a broader defense network designed to protect the Italian border against threats from the north. During World War I, the fort was stripped of significant firepower to support military operations on other fronts.

The structure represents late 19th century military engineering with concrete walls, cast iron plates, and strategic window placement for artillery positioning.

The site is currently operated as a summer colony by a religious organization, which limits casual visits to the grounds. It is wise to inquire in advance about current access policies before planning a visit to the location.

The cannons that once defended the fort were relocated eastward during wartime and never returned. This absence of original weaponry fundamentally altered the fort's purpose and character over the following decades.
