Punta Sommeiller

Punta Sommeiller rises to 3,333 meters in elevation between the Province of Turin and Savoie, featuring steep cliffs and a prominent glacier system.

The mountain received its name from Germain Sommeiller, the engineer who directed the construction of the Fréjus Rail Tunnel connecting Italy and France.

The summit marks the convergence of three municipalities: Bardonecchia and Exilles in Italy, and Bramans in France, reflecting the alpine border heritage.

Hikers can access the summit through the southern ridge starting from Passo Settentrionale dei Fourneaux at 3,159 meters, with support from four mountain shelters.

The mountain contained a glacier ski resort until 1980, when glacier retreat and road maintenance difficulties led to the closure of the installations.
