Bivacco Sigot, Mountain shelter in Exilles, Italy
Bivacco Sigot is a small mountain shelter situated at 2921 meters (9583 feet) in the Cottian Alps. It provides basic refuge for hikers and climbers traveling through high alpine terrain.
Built in 1997, this shelter was created as a memorial following a fatal climbing accident in 1994. The project reflected a commitment by the local alpine community to honor those lost in the mountains.
The construction involved volunteers from the Susa section of the Italian Alpine Club and members of the National Alpine Rescue Corps, demonstrating local community engagement.
The shelter is open year-round and operates on a self-service basis without permanent staff. Visitors should be prepared for high altitude conditions and bring necessary supplies, as you manage your own needs at this remote location.
The shelter receives joint support from both the Province of Turin and local mountain communities, making it a rare example of shared governance in high alpine areas. This partnership has helped keep the facility reliable over the decades.
