Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietraquaria, Catholic sanctuary on Mount Salviano, Avezzano, Italy
The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietraquaria is a shrine located on Mount Salviano at approximately 1000 meters above sea level. The white-plastered structure contains three altars and stained glass windows created by artist Marcello Ercole in 1992.
The sanctuary's construction began in 1614 following a shepherd's discovery of an ancient Madonna image found within the remains of the medieval settlement of Pietra Aquaria. This finding transformed the location into a pilgrimage destination for the surrounding region.
The sanctuary holds deep meaning for the local community, particularly during the April celebrations when religious processions and traditional bonfires draw visitors from surrounding towns. Residents gather to honor the Madonna through these customs that have shaped the spiritual identity of the area.
The adjoining Domus Mariae facility is managed by Benedictine Sisters of Charity and offers accommodation and retreat spaces for visiting pilgrims. The mountain location and altitude mean sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are recommended for reaching the site.
The sanctuary displays approximately one hundred ex votos, personal offerings left by visitors who believe they received miraculous help. These items form a touching record of devotion spanning multiple generations of the faithful.
