Avezzano, Administrative commune in Province of L'Aquila, Italy.
Avezzano is a commune in the Province of L'Aquila that serves as the commercial and industrial center of the Marsica region. The town sits at an altitude of 695 meters between Rome and L'Aquila and connects several transport routes through the Abruzzo.
The earthquake of January 13, 1915 destroyed most of the town and left only the Casa dei Palazzi and a section of the Orsini Castle standing. The reconstruction changed the urban layout fundamentally and created a modern center on the ruins of the old settlement.
The Orsini Castle from 1490 displays a sixteenth-century portal and hosts the Museo Lapidario with objects from Roman settlements. The collection offers insight into the life of ancient inhabitants who once lived along the shores of Lake Fucino.
Regular train services, motorways and bus routes connect the town to Rome, Sulmona and L'Aquila through the central transport hub. The main points of interest lie within the compact center and can be reached on foot.
The Claudius Tunnels built between 41 and 52 AD demonstrate Roman engineering in the attempt to drain Lake Fucino. This ancient project was one of the largest water management works of the Roman imperial era and employed thousands of workers over a decade.
