Description
Urayasu is a city in northwestern Chiba Prefecture that stretches along Tokyo Bay and connects to the capital through the Edo River. The urban area includes both older residential districts along the water and a large zone of theme parks and hotels on reclaimed land.
History
The settlement began during the Edo period as a fishing village supplying seafood to the capital. Large land reclamation projects in the 1960s reshaped the coast and created new areas for residential and commercial use.
Culture
The name translates as "peaceful bay", and the waterfront retains a quiet residential character in neighborhoods away from the resort zone. Local restaurants along the older streets serve fresh seafood brought in from the bay each morning.
Practical
The city sits directly next to Tokyo and is easy to reach by several train lines and the Wangan Expressway. Many visitors come just for a day trip to the theme parks, but the residential neighborhoods along the river can also be explored on foot.
