Asamushi Onsen, building in Aomori Prefecture, Japan
Asamushi Onsen is a hot spring resort on the coast in Aomori where warm water naturally rises from underground. The chloride-rich waters are odorless and leave the skin feeling soft, which draws visitors for extended soaking sessions.
The town developed as a resort around the natural hot springs that had long drawn people seeking healing. Over time it grew into an established center with hotels and inns that welcomed visitors from across the region.
The name Asamushi comes from early visitors who bathed in the natural hot springs here. Today the Nebuta Festival shapes local culture, with glowing floats pulled through streets, especially during winter months, drawing visitors into the town's festive traditions.
The town is easily reached by train from central Aomori and has a free footbath right at the station entrance. The east side features smaller traditional inns with narrow streets for walking, while the west side offers larger hotels with ocean views and beach activities.
The Roadside Station Yu-sa has a large public hot spring bath on its top floor with views of the sea and a small island. This unusual combination of rest stop and bath offers visitors a rare soaking experience with views over the bay.
