JR East Shiki Theatre Aki, Musical theatre in Kaigan, Tokyo, Japan.
JR East Shiki Theatre Aki is a theatre in the Kaigan district of Tokyo, run by the Shiki Theatre Company, with seating for around 900 people. It stages rotating Japanese musical productions throughout the year, making it one of the company's dedicated venues in the city.
The theatre opened in October 1998 as one of the Shiki Theatre Company's dedicated venues, a company that has been producing theatre in Japan since 1953. Over the decades, the company shaped how musical productions are staged and received across the country.
The theatre offers subtitle glasses in English, Chinese, and Korean so that international visitors can follow the story on stage. This technology lets audiences stay focused on the performance while reading the text in their own language.
The venue is a short walk from Takeshiba Station and can also be reached from Daimon and Hamamatsucho stations without much effort. Visitors coming from different parts of Tokyo will find the area easy to navigate on foot once they arrive.
Through a program called Kokoro no Gekijo, around 360,000 children attend performances here every year at no cost to them. For many of these children, it is the first time they see a live stage production in their lives.
