北九州市民球場, baseball stadium in Japan
Kitakyushu Municipal Baseball Stadium, also known as Kitakyushu Shimin Kyujo, is a baseball venue located in Kokurakita-ku, in the city of Kitakyushu, Japan. The field has a dirt and clay infield with natural grass in the outfield, and the surrounding bleacher seating gives spectators a clear view from every section.
The stadium was built in the late 1950s, making it one of the older baseball facilities still in use in the Kyushu region. Over the following decades it went through several rounds of improvements to keep it functional for both players and spectators.
The stadium draws fans from across the Kitakyushu area, and on game days the stands fill quickly with groups of friends and families cheering together. The noise from the crowd spills out well beyond the gates, giving the surrounding streets a festive feel.
The closest monorail stop is about a 10-minute walk from the stadium, and using public transit on game days is a good idea since parking nearby fills up fast. Arriving a bit early gives you time to get your bearings around the grounds before the game starts.
The stadium has six floodlight towers that make evening games possible, which is not a given for a municipal baseball ground of this age and size. When these lights were first installed, this kind of setup was relatively rare for a city-run facility in Japan.
