Nikiyama Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Koryo, Nara Prefecture, Japan.

Nikiyama Kofun is an ancient burial mound shaped like a keyhole, with a rounded rear section and a square front platform. The structure contains stone burial chambers and represents the burial architecture of early Japanese nobility.

The mound was built during the Kofun period between 300 and 538 CE, when the Yamato clan consolidated their rule over Japan. This era marked a time of significant cultural and political development in Japanese history.

The mound reflected burial practices that displayed the power and status of early Japanese elites. Such structures served as public symbols of rank and authority in ancient society.

To visit, take a train to Koryo station and follow the marked pathways through the Takamatsu district. The site is best explored on foot so you can see the entire mound shape from different vantage points.

Researchers use the mound's specific construction to study ancient Japanese building methods. The way earth and stone were layered reveals craftsmanship techniques used during this early period.
